What should I do in the 0-6 weeks postpartum?

There is a alot of emphasis on the 6 week check (or more for caesarean) being the green light for commencement for activity for most woman, and this is for good reason to do with medical assessment, readiness, adequate timing for healing and the lochia to subside. The complexity with this is that most functional activities with a baby require movement prior to this time (especially those with older children or lack of support) so there can be difficulty in completing activities safely in this time. Also the other complexity is that there is little support for where to start post these 6 weeks which can result in women with all the best intentions doing the wrong type of exercise too early or conversely being nervous or embarrassed about recommencing activity with any common postnatal challenges so avoid a more active lifestyle.

It is important in that early vulnerable phase that medical support is provided and is appropriate, so this information is in no way replacing this. However, I think some guidance on the type of activity that is safe within this initial period is helpful as a guide.

The Guidelines from the Sports Medicine of Australia, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists - UK, indicate that if pregnancy and delivery is ‘uncomplicated’, a mild exercise programme consisting of walking, pelvic floor exercises and stretches may begin immediately. It is recommended however that they don’t undertake aerobic exercise to allow for necessary healing, and shouldn’t experience discomfort prior to partaking in exercise.

Some potential exercises that are safe, with medical clearance and in consideration of the above include;

Walking

Each day, initially for short periods. Gradually build from 5 - 30 minutes

Rest

Not officially an exercise but needs to be said - sleep & horizontal rest - whenever you can!

Gentle Abdominal Movement

Mini pelvic tilts
Knee rocks side to side
Pelvic tilts in All 4’s
Hip circles

Gentle Stretches

Neck
Shoulders
Pec’s to help with feeding
